The Causes of Radicalization

What are the reasons of extremism ? The researchers found that there is no one pathway for extremism or radicalization, there is no speed at which it can happens. The radicals came from different backgrounds, some of them are more educated than the normal person, some of them have low level of education, some are born and raised up in rich families while the others are poor.

It seems that there are socio-economic and psychological factors that can lead the person for extremism or radicalization. The experts group these factors into three categories. push factors, pull factors and contextual factors.

Push factors

“Push Factors” is what can drive the person to violent extremism, for example marginalization and inequality. discrimination or persecution. other factors that can drive the person to Radicalization can be the limited access to quality and relevant education; the denial of rights or civil liberties; there is also other environmental, historical and socio-economic reasons.

Pull factors

“Pull Factors” is what can pull the person to extremism or radicalization. For example: the existence of organized extremist groups and this groups is using effective programmes like employment in exchange for membership or help in marriage or other revenue. This groups can lure the new members by providing outlets for grievances or promise them with freedom. These groups should appear to offer spiritual comfort, the group will be the new place to belong, and will be a supportive social network. the group will rely on something that make the members unite together such as the race, the religion or the nationality.

Contextual factors

Contextual factors is what will provide a terrain to the violent extremist groups, For example: poverty,corruption,fragile states, the lack of rule of law and criminality.

The Push factors, pull factors and the contextual factors are working together, when a country has this three factors then the risk of joining the radical groups will be higher.

Isolation and break with the family or the long-standing friendships because the group will be his new family and its members will be his new friends.

Drop-out of school or problems at the school.

Change in the way of life, some behaviors that is related to the food, clothing and the terms that is used in the language or finances.

Changes in the thoughts, ideas and the behavior toward the other race or the other religious groups.

Antisocial comments and ideas, rejection of the law and the authority, refuse to interact socially, signs of withdrawal.

Reading books that encourage radical Ideas, visiting internet sites and social media networks that condone extremist or radical views.
